Mission of the Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences VUmc

The Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences of the VU University Medical Center offers a multidisciplinary environment for research and (post)academic education. With internationally acclaimed research programs, the pathobiology of neurodegenerative diseases and addictive behaviour is broadly investigated, in a translational fashion. Innovative fundamental neuroscientific research is translated to the clinical setting, where the patient can directly benefit from the latest insights of neuroscience. Vice versa, observations from patient studies are used to endophenotype disease and to further stimulate the fundamental search for new treatment targets. In terms of education, the Department plays an essential role in the fields of human/clinical anatomy, pharmacology and neuroscience, with central positions in (bio)medical and psychology bachelor and master programs and a strong track record in postacademic education in Medicine. The Department’s educational programs are widely recognized for their interdisciplinarity, and entertain close relationships with the Departments of Radiology, Neurology and Psychiatry. The dynamic interplay between research and education places the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience in a central position within VU University Medical Center and the Neurocience Campus Amsterdam, and –importantly- makes it a highly enjoyable and stimulating work place.
